The Cheviot Hills

The Cheviot Hills

The Cheviots offer scope for some high quality QMDs on remote ground with no hordes. It’s interesting country. I’ve visited it briefly, the first time I ran the OMM (which was then the KIMM). It was my introduction to being in the mountains navigating under pressure in late autumn with a smidgen of snow and horizontal rain. When we woke up in the morning of the second day a couple of people had been flooded out on the campsite and I have a distinct memory of the team next to us getting up the middle of the night to secure their tent with a toothbrush. At the end of the second day we ate peaches pickled in brandy and slept in the car for an hour. On the drive home we stopped at the services and shaved off our beards.

There are nine summits in the Cheviots (over 610m) clustered fairly close together. This is difficult and challenging ground in places. As my then running partner said, ‘It’s like running over someones brain its so convoluted.’ it is at least as remote as The Lake District, or the Peak District, or parts of Snowdonia.

The Cheviots are heavily farmed with lots of dry stone walls on the Open Access. Care should be taken not to damage any dry stone walls and/or fences as these are expensive to repair. Please refer to your rights under CROW and a summary HERE.
